🧠 Employee (User) Research
Lack of Visibility: Many employees were unaware of existing sustainability initiatives or how their contributions could make an impact.
Information Overload: Sustainability updates were spread across disconnected channels, making it difficult for users to find relevant, actionable information.
Motivation Tied to Meaning: Users were more likely to engage when they saw tangible results, community involvement, or connections to causes they cared about.
Time & Access Barriers: Employees cited limited time and unclear sign-up processes as major obstacles to volunteering or participating in sustainability programs.
🧩 The Problems
Although Boardriders was deeply committed to sustainability, improving our Higg Index score required significant cross-functional effort. We needed to empower and motivate employees to volunteer, making it easier for them to understand, access, and contribute to high-impact sustainability tasks at scale, with that main goal in mind we asked:
"How might we inspire action and make sustainability feel personal, accessible and rewarding for our employees?"
Low employee participation in sustainability efforts due to a lack of clear, engaging communication.
Intranet lacked an organized, accessible hub for sustainability information, limiting awareness and involvement.
Global teams had inconsistent branding and communication materials, causing misalignment and inefficiencies.

🤝 Let's Work Together
One of the most effective ways to gain employee buy-in was by involving them behind the scenes early on. Inviting them to brainstorm ideas and contribute to real solutions. When people felt heard their engagement and willingness to volunteer increased significantly. Here's an example of workshop where employees helped us brainstorm ideas and company goals that tied back to SDG pillars:
